New Jersey Pay Stub FAQs

NJ TDI (Temporary Disability Insurance) provides short-term disability benefits funded by employee contributions of 0.19% of wages in 2026. NJ FLI (Family Leave Insurance) provides paid family leave benefits funded by employee contributions of 0.23% of wages in 2026. Both apply to the first $171,100 of wages. Both are mandatory New Jersey payroll deductions.

New Jersey mandates several employee-funded insurance programs (TDI, FLI, and UI/WF/SWF) in addition to state income tax. While this results in more deduction lines than most states, it provides employees with broader disability, family leave, and unemployment benefits coverage.

Under the NJ Paid Sick Leave Act (N.J.S.A. 34:11D), employees accrue 1 hour of earned sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours per year. Employers may front-load 40 hours at the start of the benefit year instead of using accrual tracking.

A New Jersey paystub is among the most detailed in the country due to multiple employee-side payroll deductions. In addition to federal taxes and NJ state income tax (1.4% to 10.75% progressive), employees pay NJ TDI (Temporary Disability Insurance), NJ FLI (Family Leave Insurance), and NJ UI/WF/SWF (Unemployment, Workforce Development, and Supplemental Workforce Fund) contributions.

New Jersey has four separate state-mandated employee deductions that must appear on every pay stub. The NJ Wage Payment Law (N.J.S.A. 34:11-4.6) requires an itemized statement of deductions with every payment of wages. Non-compliance can result in penalties and wage claim liability.

NJ State Income Tax (1.4% to 10.75% progressive) • NJ TDI: Temporary Disability Insurance (0.19% in 2026) • NJ FLI: Family Leave Insurance (0.23% in 2026) • NJ UI/WF/SWF: Unemployment and Workforce Development (0.425% employee share) • Federal Income Tax, Social Security, Medicare • Earned sick leave balance

New Jersey has four separate state deductions on employee paychecks; do not combine them into one line. • NJ TDI and FLI rates change annually, so verify current rates at nj.gov before each calendar year. • Employees accrue 1 hour of earned sick leave per 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours per year. • NJ minimum wage is $15.92/hr in 2026 for most employers.
