Anatomy of a Restaurant Pay Stub

Know what every line means before you fill it in.

Cash wage
The hourly wage the employer pays directly. Federal law allows as little as $2.13 an hour for tipped employees if tips make up the difference; many states require more.
Tip credit
The difference between the cash wage and minimum wage that the employer counts tips toward. States like California and Washington do not allow a tip credit.
Reported tips
Cash and card tips reported by the employee. They are taxable wages even though the employee already has the cash.
Overtime
Overtime is based on the full minimum wage, not the reduced cash wage.
Taxes on tips
Social Security, Medicare, and income tax apply to reported tips, which is why a tipped employee's net check can be very small.
Net pay
What is left of the paycheck after taxes on wages plus tips; tips already received in cash are not paid again.

Restaurant Pay Stub FAQs

Yes. Reported tips are added to the base hourly wage to calculate total gross earnings. Federal income tax and FICA taxes are applied to the combined amount. Our template clearly separates base pay and tips so both employer and employee can see the breakdown.

The tip credit allows employers to pay tipped employees a direct cash wage below the standard minimum wage (as low as $2.13/hour federally) as long as tips bring total compensation to at least the full minimum wage. Not all states allow tip credits. Our template lets you set any base wage rate to match your state's rules.

Most states require employers to provide itemized pay statements to all employees, including tipped restaurant workers. Even in states that do not require it, providing detailed paystubs is a best practice for transparency and dispute resolution.

A restaurant paystub is an industry-specific earnings statement designed for food service workers such as servers, bartenders, hosts, and kitchen staff. It separates base hourly wages from reported tip income and calculates taxes on the combined total. Restaurant paystubs may also reflect the tip credit, which allows employers in some states to pay a lower direct wage when tipped income brings total compensation above the minimum wage.

The restaurant industry has unique payroll requirements because a large portion of employee compensation comes from tips. Both employers and employees must accurately report tip income to the IRS, and FICA taxes apply to wages plus reported tips. A restaurant-specific paystub template ensures that base pay and tips are clearly separated, making it easier to comply with IRS tip reporting rules and state wage laws.

Base hourly wage and hours worked • Reported cash and credit card tips • Combined gross earnings (wages + tips) • Federal income tax on total compensation • Social Security and Medicare on wages and tips • Year-to-date tip and wage totals

Report all tips, including cash tips, to comply with IRS requirements. • Verify that base wage plus tips meets or exceeds the applicable minimum wage. • Use Form 4070 to report monthly tip income to your employer. • Track tips daily in a log to avoid discrepancies at tax time.
